First bong? Skip the analysis paralysis. Four decisions actually matter — shape, size, thickness, and budget. Here's the honest version of each.
1. Shape: start with a beaker
A beaker is the classic for a reason: the wide base won't tip, the water volume cools well, and cleaning is simple. Straight tubes clear faster with a punchier hit; round bases split the difference with more style. You can go weird later — recyclers, fab eggs, inline percs all live in our bong collection — but a 10-12" beaker is the right first piece for almost everyone.
2. Size: 10-12 inches is the sweet spot
Under 8" (minis) travels well and hits punchy but warm. Over 14" delivers huge, cool rips but needs two hands and a shelf. The 10-12" middle ground gives you smooth hits, easy handling and easy cleaning. Height is listed in the spec pills on every listing.
3. Thickness: 5mm+ if it's a daily driver
Glass thickness is the difference between a piece that survives a tip-over and one that doesn't. 3-4mm is fine on a shelf queen; 5mm+ borosilicate is what you want for daily use. Clumsy household? Consider silicone — modern ones hit surprisingly well and genuinely cannot break.
4. Budget honestly
At under $50 you're buying simple, functional glass — real, just basic. $50-100 is the value zone: name brands, real percolators, thick glass. Past $100 you're paying for craft — heady work, premium brands, complex percs. All three tiers are legitimate; just know which one you're shopping.
Don't forget the supporting cast
A grinder improves every session more than any upgrade to the bong itself, and a bottle of 91% iso plus coarse salt keeps your new piece tasting like day one. That's the whole starter kit.
